The following description note from the artist is on the back of this Irish print:
“Ballyhack Castle and Harbour, Co Wexford”
Ballyhack Casle is located on a steep slope in a commanding position overlooking Waterford estuary. The castle, a large tower house, is thought to have been built c.1450 by the Knights Hospitallers of St. John, one of the two great military orders founded at the beginning of the 12th century at the time of the Crusades. It also sits adjacent to one of the countries most beautiful little fishing harbours where in the evening time you can sit and have a pint of the “black stuff” and enjoy the sun setting in the distance.

The pretty little fishing village of Ballyhack is located on the south-east coast of Ireland in County Wexford, on the eastern shore 8 miles from Waterford Harbour where the Three Sisters River forms a large estuary (the Three Sisters being the combined rivers of Barrow, Nore and Suir). There is also a ferry terminal in Ballyhack.
Ballyhack harbour gives great shelter from winds, shallow boats are suitable for inside the harbour as can be seen from this beautiful print, while larger boats can safely anchor outside the harbour. The size of the estuary allows safe access at any time and during all tides.
The headquarters of the Knights Hospitallers of St John was established in Ballyhack in the 12th century and on the same site they built the Ballyhack Castle, a Norman castle, c1450. The castle is steeped in history and is open to visitors where you can view the dungeon, murder-hole, effigies and oratory.
