The Harp
The Irish Harp, or Celtic Harp, is the official emblem of Ireland. The style of the Irish Harp is triangular in shape and based on the oldest surviving harp from the 15th century. The Brian Boru Harp or Trinity College Harp can be seen on display in Trinity College, Dublin.
A golden harp on a green flag was the flag of Ireland since the seventeenth century. The tricolour came into use following the 1916 rebellion. The Irish Free State adopted the harp as the official emblem of Ireland in 1923 and the harp is still used on official documents, Irish coinage, etc.
Ireland is unique in having a musical instrument as it’s official national emblem. The Irish harp has been held in high regard in Irish society having been played in Ireland since ancient times. Many believe it has healing qualities and describe the sound as heavenly. The harp demands an eloquence and its music is compelling, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
