“The Ha’penny Bridge, Dublin”

Built in 1816, this bridge is a cast iron pedestrian bridge over the River Liffey in Dublin. Before this bridge was built people crossed the River Liffey by ferry, but as the ferries fell into disrepair it was decided a bridge was a cheaper option than repairing the boats. The Ha’penny Bridge got its name for the half penny toll a person was charged to cross it and even had turnstiles at either side of it to take the fee. This was dropped in 1919 but the name has remained and it now stands as one of Dublin’s most iconic and romantic structures.

The bridge was originally named the Wellington Bridge after the Dublin born Duke of Wellington and was renamed the Liffey Bridge in 1922, but always known to all as the Ha’penny Bridge. One cannot visit Dublin without taking the short walk across this beautiful cast iron work of art. In it’s early years c450 people crossed the bridge per day, now it is estimated 30,000 Dubliners and visitors use this historic bridge daily. Ha’Penny Bridge
