Men of Aran bronze statue, fabulous gifts from Ireland. The Currach boat is famed as the traditional fishing boat of the Aran Islands, which are situated off the west coast of Ireland. The men of the Aran islands carried these traditional boats overhead down to the sea daily, where they would catch fish to feed their families and wider community.
The fishermen would have worn homespun trousers, knitted socks and cowhide slippers known as pampooties. Each family had individual stitches and Celtic patterns on their knitted jumpers. Each design represented different families and prayers to keep them safe at sea, sadly these patterns helped identify the fishermen if they were washed up from the sea. These warm wool Aran jumpers became famous across the world.
Life was hard for the fishermen of the Aran Islands. These men were so brave to fight the strong Atlantic elements to sustain their families and communities, their camaraderie and trust in each other would have been immense.
