Ogham is the earliest form of Irish writing dating from the 4th century mainly. Over 350 Ogham stones have been discovered. It was believed that Ogham was a magical script. Ogham inscriptions would have been engraved into wood similar to wands, however none still exist to confirm or deny this. Ogham would have been used by the ancient Druids as a form of sign language. The letters had no more than five characters, which could be easily replicated using their hands.
