Skellig Michael (Gaelic Sceilig MhichÃl, “Michael’s Rock”), also know as Great Skellig, it is sited some 12km southwest of Valentia Island, County Kerry on the Athlantic coast and towers 714ft (218 metres) about sea leavel.
On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find a remarkably well preserved sixth century monastic settlement of the Early Christian period, reputedly founded by Saint Fionán, but the first reference to Monks on the Skelligs date to the eighth century when the death of ‘Suibhni of Scelig’ is recorded.
The monks lived in stone “beehive” huts (clocháns), perched above nearly vertical cliff walls.
It was eventually abandoned in the 11th century.
Small Skellig is equally renowed in matters of ornithology as it is home to Puffins and some 27,000 pairs of gannets – the second largest colony of such seabirds in the world.
It is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Skellig Michael has been used as a location for scenes in the Star Wars movies.
