This handcrafted Newgrange brooch by Kieran Cunningham is inspired by the famous spirals at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Newgrange. Made in County Wicklow from alpaca silver, the brooch measures approximately 4 cm and offers a meaningful Irish heritage design in a wearable form.

Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb dating to around 3200 BC, older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza, and is closely associated with the Winter Solstice.

Story & Significance

Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb in the Bru na Boinne landscape of County Meath, dating to around 3200 BC. Its passage and chamber are famously aligned so the winter-solstice sunrise can travel through the roof-box and illuminate the interior.

The spiral patterns associated with Newgrange are older than Celtic art, which makes them especially powerful on contemporary Irish gifts. They suggest sunlight, renewal, mystery and the long memory of a landscape people were shaping more than five thousand years ago.
