Story & Significance
The 1916 Proclamation was publicly read by Patrick Pearse outside the General Post Office in Dublin at 12.45 pm on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, as the Easter Rising began. Printed in haste at Liberty Hall, it declared an Irish Republic as a sovereign, independent state and set out a vision of rights and national self-determination.
Its seven signatories - Thomas J. Clarke, Sean Mac Diarmada, Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas MacDonagh, Eamonn Ceannt and Joseph Plunkett - were later court-martialled and executed after the Rising failed. Framed today, the Proclamation remains a powerful reminder of idealism, sacrifice and the making of modern Ireland.
