This Newgrange Shawl and Hair Pin is handcrafted by Kieran Cunningham in County Wicklow from copper, brass and alpaca silver.
The three-spiral design is inspired by the ancient carvings at Newgrange, one of Ireland's best-known heritage sites. Polished and lacquered to help reduce tarnishing, the piece can be worn as a shawl pin or hair pin and makes a distinctive Irish gift for Celtic design lovers.
Story & Significance
Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb in the Bru na Boinne landscape of County Meath, dating to around 3200 BC. Its passage and chamber are famously aligned so the winter-solstice sunrise can travel through the roof-box and illuminate the interior.
The spiral patterns associated with Newgrange are older than Celtic art, which makes them especially powerful on contemporary Irish gifts. They suggest sunlight, renewal, mystery and the long memory of a landscape people were shaping more than five thousand years ago.
