The Aran Islands are situated off the west coast of Ireland. The fishermen of the island wore knitted (Aran) jumpers, homespun trousers, knitted socks and cowhide slippers known as pampooties. Each family on the island had individual stitches and Celtic patterns on their knitted jumpers. Each design represented that family and prayers to keep their firshermen safe at sea. Sadly these patterns helped identify the fishermen if they were washed up from the sea. These warm wool Aran sweaters became famous across the world. Life was hard for the fishermen of the Aran Islands. These men were so brave to fight the strong Atlantic elements in their currach boats. They sustained their families and communities. Their camaraderie and trust in each other would have been immense.
This pottery Carafe is an ideal Irish gift for lots of occasions, including:
Created by Castle Arch Pottery, based at Castle Yard, Kilkenny Town. If you are ever in the area drop by and see Ray in his studio. A native of Cork, Ray Power set up Castle Arch Pottery in the Autumn of 1993. Located in Kilkenny’s famous Castle Yard under the gaze of Kilkenny Castle. Ray takes his inspiration from Celtic patterns to make bold honest pieces, which stand out and enhance formal and decorative settings.
Each piece of this stoneware clay pottery is made in small production batches on the potter’s wheel. This allows for great attention be paid to decorative details. Such as handles, sprigs and to the fluent slip-trailed decoration with embossed surfaces. The penultimate stage sees each piece bisque fired to 1000cc. Then the final stage of glazing and firing again to 1200cc. This guarantees the pottery will be both microwave and dishwasher safe. This traditional approach is typical of Irish country potteries. Ensures that Castle Arch Pottery maintains its unique character. The glazes used are both luscious and eye catching. They have been carefully developed over the years. Endeavours are made to produce this pottery in a sustainable and ethical manner.
Handmade in Ireland, by Castle Arch Pottery, County Kilkenny.

This is a very nice carafe I have bought as a Christmas present for a wine connoisseur. It’s an unusual gift and I think it will be well received.
