While the Trinity Knot represented many things of three to the Celts. In modern times, the Trinity Knot is gifted as a token of promise; to love, to honour and to protect.
The Trinity Knot is also known as the Triquetra, which literally means three cornered. This is one of the most recognisable of the Celtic knotworks and symbols. The Triquetra predates Christianity. It was the Celtic symbol of the Goddess Odin. The Celts believed the Triquetra to represent many things of three:
The ancient Celtic Trinity Knot was adopted by Christianity as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. i.e. the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. This symbol is often found in ancient Irish manuscripts, such as the famous Book of Kells.
The Triquetra was also used to symbolise and honour the Mother, Maiden and Crone of the neo-pagan triple goddess, it signifies the three life-cycles or stages of womanhood in relation to the phases of the moon.
