This handmade ceramic Celtic Chess Set is inspired by Fidchell, an ancient Irish board game associated with myth and early Irish tradition. The four corner squares represent the four provinces of Ireland, while the centre square represents Meath and the High King at Tara.
The High King has eight defenders and faces twelve attackers. The aim is for the High King to reach one of the four province squares without being captured. Instructions for play are included.

The board measures approximately 21.5 x 29 cm. Pieces measure approximately 3 cm, with the King at approximately 4 cm. Handmade by O'Gowna Studios in Co. Dublin from cold cast porcelain, with slight visual variations possible between sets.
Story & Significance
Fidchell was an Old Irish board game mentioned in medieval Irish literature. Its exact rules have not survived, but the sources remember it as a game of skill, judgement and status, played on a board with pieces.
That makes it a fitting reference for a Celtic chess set. The game may be modern chess, but the design echoes an older Irish world of strategy, storytelling and carved pieces gathered around a board.
