This high cross is one of the earliest and most important of the crosses found in Ireland, dating to the 7th century. This national monument’s location is in an old monastery founded by St Patrick on the Innishowen Peninsula in County Donegal. The name ‘Carndonagh’ means the ‘Burial Mound of the Church’. This cross is also known as the Donagh or St. Patrick’s Cross
The original high crosses were carved on big slabs of granite stone. The Carndonagh Cross is carved with Celtic knotwork and Christian depictions of Jesus and his followers. The Celtic knotwork represents the Tree of Life.

The Carndonagh Cross Wall Ornament gift is created by Rynhart Fine Art Bronze. Who are based in beautiful Glengarriff, Co. Cork. Jeanne Rynhart formed this company in 1981. Jeanne was well known for famous public sculptures such as Molly Malone, Annie Moore and the Rose of Tralee. In 1994 Jeanne’s daughter, Audrey, teamed up with her. Audrey and her husband, Les Elliott, now run the business from their studio in Glengarriff. Their passion for Irish history and Celtic design is evident from their attention to detail in Rynhart bronze art pieces.
Rynhart’s bronze art is individually handmade and is bas relief. The process is labour intensive and starts with delicate, careful modelling. When Rynhart are happy with the model a mould is made and cast. Finally, each piece is polished and finishing touches added.
