Ceramic St Brigid’s Cross, handmade in Ireland by Callura Pottery, Co. Clare. This is a very beautiful design of the traditional St. Brigid’s Cross. This cross comes with a small Callura notelet with a brief information piece about the St. Brigid’s Cross.

St. Brigid is the 2nd patron saint of Ireland and her St. Brigid’s Cross is the traditional Irish housewarming gift. The belief still holds true to this day that the St. Brigid’s cross protects a house from fire and evil, every home should have one! This St. Brigid’s Cross would look great in both traditional and contemporary homes.

Quality handmade St. Brigid’s Cross with a strong braided rope attached for hanging.  This St. Brigid’s Cross is a hand pressed clay wall hanging, fired and finally glazed.

Presented in tissue and kraft paper wrap.

St. Brigid’s Cross

This plaque shows an image of the ancient Celtic Cross kown as the ‘St. Brigid’s Cross’. St. Brigid was a saint who lived in Ireland 1,500 years ago, and is accredited with inventing the simple cross. It is traditionally plated or woven from rushes (i.e. bog grass) on St. Brigid’s Eve, the 1st of February. Placed in the home, above the door, its purpose is to bless all who enter and to gain protection for the household from fire and disease. Over the generations it has become a symbol for peace and goodwill and is offered as an indication of a desire for friendship.

Callura Pottery is a small family run workshop based in County Clare, Ireland. Here we hand press clay plaques in a variety of designs, inspired by the art of Early Christian Ireland. This was an era of simple thoughful images, made by the monks in the monasteries to help illustrate the stories of the Bible. Such images can be seen on the High Crosses and in beautiful manuscrips like the Book of Kells.
