The Isle of Lewis Chess Set is possibly the most popular chess set in the world and this set is handmade by O’Gowna, Naul, Co. Dublin, Ireland.

The Isle of Lewis Chess Set is based on a set which was discovered in the outer Hebrides in 1831, believed to have been carved by an Icelandic sailor in the twelfth century. The crowned King carries a broadsword and is flanked by pieces representing medieval Knights and Bishops. The Rook is represented by a sentry armed with a sword and carrying an engraved shield.
Chess board included, measures 38 x 38cm. Pieces range 4 cm – 8.5 cm.
This Isle of Lewis Chess Set is made from cold cast porcelain, i.e. a porcelain powder that is bonded so that they are both decorative and functional, which means they don’t break easily. O’Gowna was taught this process over twenty years ago by Royal Doulton master craftsmen.
As this craft is handmade there may be visual variations, however, the same high quality of craftsmanship will apply to all sets.

I will say that I’m truly happy with my purchase of the Isle of Lewis Chess Set. I was traveling in Ireland for 2 weeks and came across this set in Galway.
