Tuatha Dé Danann

The Tuath Dé Danann was the most ancient race in Irish mythology. They were magical and posessed supernatural powers. They settled in four major cities; Falias, Gorias, Findias, and Murias. It is believed they lived in Ireland four thousand years pre-Christianity. It is unknown why or how they left Ireland. Some believe they never left but went to live underground and became the fairy folk.

There are two thoughts on the meaning of the name Tuatha Dé Danann, either ‘the Tribes of the Gods’ or ‘the tribe of Danu’. The goddess Danu existed in ancient Ireland and was often referred to as the mother.

Nuada was the first king of the Tuath Dé Danann. He was the god of the sea, healing and warfare. He is also associated with the sun, youth, beauty, writing, sorcery and magic.

His great sword was one of the four treasures of the Tuatha Dé Dannan, brought from the city of Findias. It had a number of names – Shining Sword, White Glaive of Light and Sword of Light. The sword was a powerful and mysterious weapon. Sometimes, it resembled a glowing bright torch known as “Nuadu’s Cainnel”.
