Maker profile
Born and raised in the rolling countryside of Belclare, Tuam, County Galway, woodworker Cian McGill was destined for a creative path. Growing up with a film-set carpenter father and a commercial artist mother, Cian spent his youth surrounded by craftsmanship, watching raw materials transform into works of art.
### A Journey to Letterfrack Cian's passion for timber led him to study Furniture Design and Manufacture at the world-renowned GMIT Letterfrack in Connemara. It was here, in the heart of the west of Ireland, that he mastered the intricate arts of joinery, cabinet making, and woodturning. During his studies, he began experimenting with native Irish hardwoods, leading to the birth of McGill Woodcraft Ireland in 2014.
### Unlocking the Grain For Cian, working with wood is a process of discovery. Whether he is carving a highly detailed, personalized map of Ireland or turning a classic spinning top, his favorite part of the process is applying the natural oil finish that suddenly reveals the hidden grain, warmth, and character of the wood. Cian works primarily with native Irish timber-including oak, ash, beech, and walnut-sourcing materials sustainably.
### Patience & Precision A core belief at McGill Woodcraft is that beautiful things take time. Cian approaches every piece with absolute patience, ensuring every edge is smooth and every carving is precise. Inspired by a blend of native Irish culture, Scandinavian simplicity, and natural forms, his creations are designed to bring the rustic, grounding beauty of the Irish forest into modern homes.
