Under Clerys Clock at 8? limited edition print

35.00 29.75

A beautiful fine art print of the famous Clerys Clock, mounted & signed by Irish artist Seán Curran. Limited edition print of only 1450, from an original watercolour.

Clerys Clock is an iconic landmark, found on the front of Clerys Department Store, O’Connell Street, Dublin. Irish people have met under Clerys Clock for decades when going out for the night or meeting friends and family up from the country. Clerys Clock was also the starting point of many romances, with a usual meet up time of 8 o’clock – hence the name for this beautiful print ‘Under Clerys Clock at 8?’, a title which makes us think – did she say ‘Yes’?!

This is a wonderful gift from Ireland with real meaning and nostalgia to so very many Irish people.

The following description note from the artist is on the back of this Irish print:

“Under Clerys Clock at 8?”

Clerys was once Dublin’s most famous department store situated on O’Connell St. in the nation’s capital. More importantly, before the days of mobile phones and social media, it was even more famous for its clock, as this venue became one of the cities popular meeting spots for young couples on a date. It was a common sight, at evening time, to see numbers of singletons, dressed to the “nines” waiting anxiously, pacing the pavement and praying not to be stood up!

Clerys Department Store is located on O’Connell Street, one of Dublin’s main thoroughfares. Clerys was completely destroyed in the 1916 Rising and was rebuilt by 1922, at which time the Clerys Clock was added over the main central doors of the store and has been replaced three times over the years. The Department store is now sadly closed, but the building and clock remain, however, there is nobody to adjust the hour when the clocks change, so for half the year the clock shows the wrong time.

Clery’s Clock very quickly became one of the most well known meeting points when in Dublin. Mention Clery’s Clock in Ireland and everyone knows it, in fact in Dublin, just saying ‘meet you under the clock’ and everyone understands it is Clery’s clock. This was the main place to meet family and friends up from the country, people would meet up here for nights out on the town, and of course the Clock was most famous as the starting point of many blossoming romances.

Created by Irish artist, Seán Curran, Co. Kildare. "I have always been interested in sketching and drawing from a very early age and first started painting in oils when I was about eleven years old. To be able to create light and shade and to make an object look three dimensional on a flat piece of paper was always something I delighted in, especially when I achieved it!"
