“Under Clerys Clock at 8?”
Clerys was once Dublin’s most famous department store situated on O’Connell St. in the nation’s capital. More importantly, before the days of mobile phones and social media, it was even more famous for its clock. This venue became one of the cities popular meeting spots for young couples on a date. It was a common sight, at evening time, to see numbers of singletons. Dressed to the “nines” waiting anxiously, pacing the pavement and praying not to be stood up!
Fine art prints of Irish landmarks.

Clerys Department Store is located on O’Connell Street, one of Dublin’s main thoroughfares. Clerys was completely destroyed in the 1916 Rising and was rebuilt by 1922. At this time the Clerys Clock was added over the main central doors of the store and has been replaced three times over the years. The Department store is now sadly closed, but the building and clock remain. However, there is nobody to adjust the hour when the clocks change, so for half the year the clock shows the wrong time.
Clery’s Clock very quickly became one of the most well known meeting points when in Dublin. Mention Clery’s Clock in Ireland and everyone knows it. In fact in Dublin, just saying ‘meet you under the clock’ and everyone understands it is Clery’s clock. This was the main place to meet family and friends up from the country, people would meet up here for nights out on the town. Of course the Clock was most famous as the starting point of many blossoming romances.
