Maker profile
The Story: Donegal Pens was established in 2010 by brothers Rónán and Conor Mc Garvey, who were just 13 and 10 years old when they began the business. What started in the Donegal Gaeltacht has grown into a workshop known for handmade writing gifts stocked in Ireland, Europe and the United States.
Their work is closely tied to place and timber. A Donegal pen is not simply a writing instrument; it is a small, useful object shaped by hand, where the grain, colour and history of the wood remain visible every time it is used.
The Process: Each pen is individually turned and assembled in the workshop at Loughanure, County Donegal. The timber is shaped on the lathe, polished carefully, examined for finish and balanced with quality pen components. Woods such as Irish bog oak, yew, ash, elm, olive, beech, cherry, laburnum, oak, maple, pear, walnut and spalted beech each bring their own colour, density and grain.
Bespoke Options: Selected Donegal Pens pieces can include personalised presentation boxes, making them especially thoughtful for graduations, retirements, weddings, promotions, awards and corporate gifts.
